What is Alopecia Areata?


Alopecia areata, goes by different names in different cultures. The causes of alopecia areata are unknown, and yet excessive stress, and certain diseases such as thyroid diseases are known to trigger it. Often in alopecia areata, the body attacks the hair cells, mistaking them as foreign invaders, and causes hair loss.

The patients experience coin-sized balding spots on their scalps. These can be local, and coin-shaped spots, as well as, more spots on the hair-bearing parts, and on the whole scalp, and cause total hair loss. It can even cause eyebrow, eyelash, and body hair loss on the whole body. What is known under different names in different cultures, is known as alopecia areata in medicine.

It can be treated. However, there are some non-medical so-called remedies such as cutting the bald spots using a razor, and applying garlic on the spots. They are not effective. It is best to visit a dermatologist in the case of alopecia areata, and they can treat these balding spots. The medical treatment is effective in treating alopecia areata.
