How are Beard and Mustache Transplant Surgeries Performed?

In beard and mustache transplantation, the FUE procedure is used. If you have decided on having a beard or mustache transplant, the back of the head or the sides of the scalp are shaved because this is the healthy donor area. After the donor area is shaved, the area is numbed using local anesthesia.

The patient is then prepared for the operation which will take about 6 – 7 hours. The patient wears a sterilized scrub/surgical gown and the patient needs to lay face down for 1.5 – 2 hours. During these 1.5 – 2 hours, we extract the hair follicles on the back of the head using 0.5 – 0.6 mm punches. For the scalp transplantation, these punches with diameters of 0.7 – 0.8 – 0.9 mm. However, because the beard area has a thinner line of hair, it is best to perform the operation with thinner hair follicles, therefore, we make use of the 0.5 – 0.6 mm diameter punches.

After the hair follicles are harvested, we preserve them in special solutions, and the patient lies on their back, and we identify the line for their beard and mustache. When the design is done, the patient’s expectations and wishes. If the patient wants, they can show us images of beard shapes that they like, like a picture of a celebrity with a beard, and we design the beard and the mustache in accordance with those pictures. After we design the beard and the mustache for transplantation, we make tiny incisions (or channels as we call them) and transplant the hair follicles to these incisions.

Making the incisions is an essential step in beard and mustache transplantation because every person has a different direction of beard and mustache growth. If we want the result to look natural, we should identify the direction/angle of the hair growth of the beard and mustache. We pay attention to the direction of growth while making the incisions, and we use both tiny slits and lateral slits. If the surgeon who performs the surgery pays attention to these, then the resulting look is 100% natural. After the hair follicles are transplanted on to the beard and mustache area, the surgery is completed, and the patient can rest. The patient should only lye on their back for the first ten days after surgery because the beard and the mustache regions to have contact with the pillow is risky.
